4ARCLIGHTAUTUMNWINTER2015NYSARCStevenKrollNYSARCsnewly-appointedExecutiveDirectorjoinedtheteaminJanuaryothisyearandhehashitthegroundrunning.Thereisnoquestionthatweareinatransormativeenvironment.Thegovernmentwantstochangehowtheypayorservices.Itwantstochangethesettingsinwhichthoseservicesaredeliveredandthemannerinwhichtheservicesaredelivered.Iknowromtalkingwithamiliessel-advocatesandleadersthatthereistremendousearaboutwhatthistransormationwillmeanhowitwillenablepeoplewithintellectualandotherdevelopmentaldisabilitiestolivesaeproductiveandhappylives.InordertoallayconcernsandanswerquestionsMr.KrollintendstotravelextensivelymeetingwithrepresentativesochaptersthroughoutNewYork.Heemphasizestheimportanceoeducatinglegislatorsregardingissuesoconcern.Familiesneedtobeabletounderstandwhatitmeansortheirlovedoneswhenthegovernmentbuildscomplexsystems.ItisNYSARCsresponsibilitytoworkwithgovernmentleaderstomakethosesystemsmoreperson-centeredandtohelpthegovernmentunderstandtheneedsotheindividualswesupport.Althoughthereremainmanyquestionsregardingitsviabilitymanagedcareisagovernmentpriority.Mr.KrollcomplimentsRocklandCountyandtheotherARCswhichhaveundertakenpilotprojectsdesignedtotestthewatersoamanagedcareenvironment.Seestorypage14Thisisanexcitingandboldleadershipopportunitythatwillsetastatewideexampleorusregardingwhatispossibleandwhatchallengesexisthesays.Successisnotyetguaranteed.Wewillneedtoknowitheratesthatthegovernmentwillpaywillbeadequatetoprovideallotheservicesnecessary.AConversationwithStevenKrollNYSARCExecutiveDirectorLongtimeNYSARCExecRetiresBestWishesfromARCofRocklandARCoRocklandoersitssinceregratitudetoMarcBrandtwhoretiredDecember312014ater32yearsatthehelmoNYSARCInc.DespitethesometimesoverwhelmingchallengesthatacedthefeldsaysMr.BrandtIneverlostaiththatmydecisiontobepartoNYSARCwasoneothebestdecisionsIhaveevermadeNYSARChasnotbeenjustacareerbuttrulymysecondamily.ThroughouthistenurewithNYSARCMarcBrandthasdemonstratedthevalueothecombinedvoicesoitsmanychaptermembers.ARCoRocklandhasclearlybenefttedromhisleadershipstatesARCoRocklandExecutiveDirectorCarmineMarchionda.AmonghisnumerousaccomplishmentsMr.BrandtciteshisinvolvementintheNewYorkCaresinitiativeasoneothemostsignifcant.Thatprogramwhichtookplaceunderthestewardshipothen-CommissionerThomasMaulandGovernorGeorgePatakigavethisfeldatremendousamountoresourcestodevelopcommunity-basedlivingopportunitiesorindividualswithdevelopmentaldisabilitieswhichreallyledtotheclosingoalmostallinstitutionsaswellasensuringthatindividualsinourcommunitiesinneedoresidentialplacementhadhomes.CertainlyNewYorkCareshasgonealongwaytoimprovethelivesothepeopleweserve.ARCalsooersitsgratitudetoJohnA.SchuppenhauerEsq.whocompletedhisourthtermoofceasPresidentoNYSARCinOctobero2014.AmongthehighlightsohistermMr.SchuppenhauerinstitutedNYSARCsPresidentsProjectaspartotheNYSARCGivesBackinitiative.ThatendeavorwasastatewideeorttoengageindivdualssupportedbyNYSARCchaptersinvolunteeractivitiesinlocalcommunities.SaysMr.MarchiondaWeareortunatetohavehadbothMr.SchuppenhauerandMarcBrandtguidingusorwardinthevibrantorganizationthatisNYSARC.Weknowthatbothmenwillcontinuetoremaininvolvedinthefeld.
