The Arc Rockland to Create New Home

Funding Awarded by New York State

The Arc Rockland was one of eight mid-Hudson agencies to receive state funds for the expansion of housing options. Governor Cuomo announced the initiative aimed primarily at individuals with developmental disabilities living at home with aging caregivers or caregivers no longer able to provide support.

This is the second round of State funding awarded to The Arc in as many years. In 2017, The Arc Rockland was the recipient of a NY State grant to develop a revolving two-year Transitional Housing program. Under professional oversight, four individuals will reside in two apartments while honing skills necessary for more independent living arrangements.

“The Arc Rockland currently provides housing for nearly 200 men and women living in 30 residences across the County,” says Rachel Shemesh, The Arc Managing Director for Residential Services.  “By spring of this year, we anticipate opening a new residence in Nyack that will be home to six men. Additionally, by summer’s end, we will inaugurate a home in Stony Point for four people.”

Further plans include the creation of a barrier-free residence for several people who are aging and have high medical needs. The agency’s residential transformation will be implemented over the course of five years. “In some instances this will mean downsizing existing homes—in other situations it will mean creating new homes or apartment options,” explains Mr. Marchionda. “The goal is to provide living arrangements that   accommodate individual needs and preferences. To that end, and based upon suggestions by families, we are exploring a number of new residential options.”

The Arc Rockland provides supports and services to more than 1200 people with intellectual and other developmental disabilities. The Arc Rockland offers a preschool for children of all abilities, an Upper School for students ages 5-21 with autism spectrum disorders, recreational opportunities,  employment training and job placement, a post-high school campus, volunteer options, a primary care medical practice geared towards people with disabilities, residential opportunities and a therapeutic indoor pool.
